"Young Sherlock Holmes,"a Paramount Pictures presentation, is the latest motion picture from Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, which Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall have built into the most successful and productive mini-studio in Hollywood. They share credits and responsibilities on Spielberg-directed films, while fostering the work of other producers, directors and writers on projects which carry the credit "Steven Spielberg Presents."
BARRY LEVINSON, whose films include "The Natural" and "Diner,"has directed "Young Sherlock Holmes, " which is produced by MARK JOHNSON, who was the producer of "The Natural" and executive producer of "Diner." The script is by CHRIS COLUMBUS, who wrote "Gremlins" and "Goonies," and is currently writing the screenplay for the third in the Indiana Jones "Raiders" series.
The Amblin Entertainment Production in Association with Henry Winkler/Roger Birnbaum is set in 1870 in England and Depicts the sleuth Sherlock Holmes in his student days involved with John H. Watson in adventurous criminology.
The role of Holmes is played by 18-year-old NICHOLAS ROWE, a former Eton schoolboy and son of a member of the British House of Commons. ALAN COX, 14-year-old son of London actor Brian Cox, plays Watson. Also starred are SOPHIE WARD and ANTHONY HIGGINS.
STEVEN SPIELBERG, KATHLEEN KENNEDY and FRANK MARSHALL were executive producers of the hit adventure films "Gremlins," "Goonies" and "Back to the Future," and, in addition to "Young Sherlock Holmes," the new film releases "The Money Pit" and "An American Tail," the latter an animated feature in the classic tradition by Don Bluth. Spielberg directed the most popular movie of all time, "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial," as well as "Jaws," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Indiana Jnes and the Temple of Doom" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"- - all among the top-earning films in history. Spielberg recently directed the film version of "The Color Purple," starring Whoopi Goldberg.
Spielberg is also executive producer, Marshall and Kennedy executives in charge of production, on Amblin's entry into television, the NBC anthology series "Amazing Stories," episodes of which have been directed by the likes of Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorcese, Irvin Kershner - -and spielberg himself. The director of photography for "Young Sherlock Holmes" was STEPHEN GOLDBLATT, whose pictures include "The Cotton Club," "The Hunger" and "Return of the Soldier," and the production designer was NORMAN REYNOLDS, who designed "Return to Oz" and won Academy Awards for "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Star Wars."
The costume designer was RAYMOND HUGHES, whose credits include "Return to Oz" and the mini-series "The Far Pavilions." Special effects supervisor was Kit West, who son an Oscar for "Raiders fo the Lost Ark" and supervised the effects for "Dune." The associate produces was HARRY BENN, who produced "The Razor's Edge." The music is by BRUCE BROUGHTON.
A strong character cast in "Yound Sherlock Holmes" includes SUSAN FLEETWOOK, FREDDIE JONES, NIGEL STOCK, ROGER ASHTON GRIFFITHS, BRIAN OULTON, DONALD ECCLES, PARICK NEWELL and EARL RHODES.
"Young Sherlock Holmes" was filmed at Thorn-EMI Elstree Studios, Borehamwood, Herts, England.
